As I write this blog post I sit on my covered front porch as a steady gentle rain falls. Our plants need this rain as we have had a hot dry summer here so far. I thought it might be a good time to go over some of the challenges many of us have in the hot weather (I know it is the opposite for those of you ‘down under’ right now, but the principles remain the same): in the summer, we need to stay cool, especially if we have a lot of internal fire.
There are a few factors that govern us, whether we are aware of them or not. The seasons, our own constitution, and the stage of life we are at (to name a few things), all create effects that we must learn to counter-balance if we want to live more harmonious lives.
Summertime presents us with warmer weather which predisposes us to certain mental and physical hurdles, especially if we already have a lot of internal heat, or we are in a warmer phase of life. Let me elaborate…
Someone with a fire constitution will especially feel challenged navigating the warmer weather (which is a high percentage of North Americans).
How would you know if you have a lot of internal fire naturally, what some of these challenges might be, and how you can manage these with greater ease?
Someone with a lot of internal fire would demonstrate the following emotions when their fire is high:
Fire out of balance: Heartburn, reflux, inflammation (within the whole body, or in particular areas like having an ulcer or any kind of ‘itis’), burning sensations, fever, hives or rashes, stomach, liver or eye issues.
Fire in balance: Good appetite and strong digestion, can gain or lose weight depending upon what they put their mind to, they are ambitious but also know when to slow down, they have uninterrupted sleep, and excellent concentration.
Ages 16-45/50 is the ‘fire’ time of life for everyone (or until the end of menopause for women): If you have a fire constitution and are between age 16 and 50, you need to be careful not to go out of balance in the summertime. (Even if you are not in this age range but have a lot of fire, you’ll still need to be mindful).
If you have a lot of internal fire, here are some of the ways that you can manage it, to bring it into balance, and to feel a little cooler:
By now you have some idea of whether or not you have a lot of fire in your constitution, and how to balance that element in your body and mind.
Know too that making these simple changes can truly go a long way towards maintaining harmony in your body and mind. I hope these simple tips help you to stay cool as a cucumber this season…
